Hernia is a word from Latin for “rupture.” A Hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal wall have weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear.
It may be present from birth or develop over a period. If the weakness is large, abdominal contents such as the bowels, may protrude through the defect causing a lump or bulge which can be easily felt.
